October 2011 Newsletter

D'Loco Kid Productions

GREETINGS dear friends, framily and family – I hope you are all keeping well. I am currently finishing off my month in NYC and have been reconnecting with the city, before I head off to San Francisco for shows and more teaching. I do miss LA a lot – but it is only because getting produced in LA is harder, I have mostly been in San Francisco and New York for almost a year, securing roots in both these cities.

The transitions are many!

While in New York, I got to rekindle my relationship with the Asian American Writer’s Workshop. The brilliantly talented and hilarious, Jen Kwok, invited me to perform there and we had a blast. Talks of holding workshops at the AAWW are happening!

I also got to meet Anu Bhagwati, the ED of SWAN – Service Women’s Action Network and was inspired by the work that Anu and SWAN do. I have placed a link below on how you can support their incredible (did I say INCREDIBLE) work they do with veterans and around sexual violence in the military (this is only the small of what they do, click here to be blown away).

Most importantly for this month, is my work with Cherrie Moraga as the sound designer on Cihuatl Productions play “New Fire”. I cannot begin to tell you how important Moraga’s work has been to my life and how, through my sister, Adelina Anthony, I have been able to work with Moraga for over a year now. New Fire is about “putting things right again” – which means to me, remembering where we came from and what we are supposed to do for the liberation of our people. Links are below on how you can support this amazing project.

Here are some of the gigs I’ll be doing this month, but check up on my website calendar as others get added:

Oct 4th – Wellesley College, Massachusetts

Oct 6th – Dyke Central Premiere, Oakland

Oct 16th – Satrang Writing Workshop Reading, Los Angeles

Oct 21st – SFWomenAgainstRape benefit “She who laughs…last”, San Francisco

Oct 24th – Beyond Dynamic Adaptability

Nov 5th – Mr. Hyphen 2011, San Francisco

Finally, the workshop I facilitate for Satrang  “Coming Out, Coming Home” will be having its annual culminating reading on Oct 16th. This year we had 11 South Asian queer and queer ally participants.

I have already started the same workshop in NYC through SALGA , and will continue for another 2 weeks with a culminating reading TBD. Finally, Trikone SF has also been in conversation with me to have the workshop come to SF for 3 weeks in late October, during the time I will be facilitating my other workshop on “Queer Masculinity”.

Thank you for supporting my work over these years. The next email will be an update on the happenings around my play Boys that Pray.

Love, D’Lo

SWAN – Service Women’s Action Network

Founded in 2007 by women veterans, Service Women’s Action Network (SWAN) is a small nonprofit that has made history! With the funds of a start-up and a dedicated staff of seven, we have made an enormous impact on the world of military gender discrimination and military sexual violence. SWAN uses legislative reform, litigation, public education, and a national peer support helpline to help secure equal opportunity and the freedom to serve in uniform without the threat of harassment, discrimination, intimidation or assault, and to secure quality health care and equal benefits for women veterans and their families.
